Your Body Is Telling You Exactly What You Need

What if I told you the guidance and answers you’re looking for are being given to you. Every single day… all day.

Well — they are.

Our bodies are always speaking to us. Giving us the answers and guidance that we need.

They’re sending us signs and messages that are directing us towards balance and alignment.

All we need to do is listen.

The thing is… listening can be the hardest part.

So let’s talk about it:

How our bodies communicate to us

Whenever we feel something in our bodies, it’s not there just to inconvenience us.

When we’re tired, anxious, overwhelmed, uninspired, frustrated… it’s telling us something. It’s our bodies asking us to pause and redirect.

Just yesterday, I was sitting down to write and feeling physically drained and uninspired. An old version of me would have just sat in those feelings, ruminated and chugged along — telling myself I “should” just power through.

(An approach that often led me to burnout not too long ago...)

But I now know to see my body as a guide to love and listen to.

SO, I decided to pause and move my body. I went for a run and listened to a podcast that inspired me. And almost instantaneously, I felt re-inspired and re-energized.

So much so, that this shift is what has inspired this entire article.

I’ve learned time and time again the power of listening to my body, and how to use the information it’s giving me to redirect and shift my focus.

Here’s how:

How can we listen to our bodies and let them guide us?

The first key is to allow what’s coming up to come up.

In other words… not shove it down or bury the feeling with distractions or crutches.

Maybe you’re feeling tired. Instead of chugging more coffee to shove it down, what if you actually allowed yourself to REST?

Maybe you’re feeling anxious. Instead of busying yourself to avoid the looming anxiety you’re feeling, what if you actually let the anxiety come up and got curious about why it might be arising?

Maybe you’re feeling uninspired + stagnant like I was yesterday. Instead of powering through writing when you know what your creative cup is nearing empty and what you’re creating is dull and uninspired, what if you took some time to re-fill your creative cup?

Now that you’ve allowed it to come up, the second thing is to ask what it’s telling you.

What does your body really need right now?

Sticking with this example from yesterday, I know exactly what my body needed in that moment: physical movement, a change of scenery + to consume something inspiring to fill my creative cup.

How did I know this is what I needed?

Because whenever I feel uninspired and stagnant, these are the things that ALWAYS help.

Some other personal examples coming to mind are:

When I feel overwhelmed, I know what my body needs is to step AWAY from consuming and practice some sort of mindfulness and grounding. Practices that help me tune out external noise and pressures. For me this often is meditating, going on a silent walk, going to a yoga class or journaling.

Or when I’m feeling physically tired and drained, I know my body needs a nap. Or very slow, intentional movement — or perhaps no movement at all! Or maybe some bone broth or tea — something that soothes the soul.

We often know what we need in these instances. That isn’t the problem.

The biggest thing actually getting in the way is this:

Giving yourself permission to give your body what it needs.

(aka, step three)

This is something I’ve struggled with for a LONG time.

I was so focused on being productive. Keeping up. Achieving. Staying busy.

I was so caught up in the external “shoulds” and what everyone else was doing, I never truly allowed space for my body to have a say. Let alone determine how I structured my day and made decisions.

And this was the biggest thing keeping me misaligned.

Because it was causing me to always push down what my body needed and let my tunnel visioned mind guide me instead. But again… this has led me to burnout. More than once.

The tricky thing is, what our body needs is often different than what our mind is telling us we “should” be doing. But if you ask me — our body ALWAYS knows best.

Whenever I listen to my body instead of my thinking mind, it’s always served me. In the examples I’ve described previously, and in countless others.

But it’s taken time for me to give myself permission to let my body tell me what I need. It can feel difficult when we’ve been so accustomed to just shoving it down and continuing with what logically makes sense.

Giving ourselves permission to listen to our body and give our body what it needs is the purest act of self love.

And I promise you, the alignment and balance you’re craving will come when you let your body show you the way.

So, what does your body need today?

What is it guiding you towards? (or away from…)
